World Wide Views on Global Warming

DML is one among other 62 countries designated as a national partner of the WWViews project which aims to develop a participative methodology that allows citizens all over the world to contribute to the United Nations climate summit COP15 in Copenhagen, in November/December 2009. COP 15 is expected to determine the next steps in the Kyoto process. The main purpose of WWViews is to give citizens around the world a chance to influence the negotiations at the climate summit and therefore the future global climate policy. Hence citizens will join the process of identifying targets and formulating policies that constitute the future way of dealing with climate change.

A few weeks ahead to the COP 15 parallel national citizen participation activities – approximately 100 citizens will take part per nation – will be conducted within 24 hours all over the world. These activities and the produced results will be mediated through a public web tool. It shall also serve as a national information source for the media, for official delegations to COP 15 and decision makers as well as for the public. The overarching purpose of the project is to achieve that citizens form different parts of the world can become a relevant part of political decision-making processes on a global scale.

The project was initiated by the Danish Board of Technology (DBT) and the Danish Cultural Institute and is organised as a as a WWViews Alliance of different kinds of partners who contribute with different kinds of expertise.
The Indonesian Program

Considering the people of Indonesia, amounting to 230 million people and spread around the 17,000 islands, Indonesia WWViews activities in the design as follows:

1. Share activities WWViews based on geographic differences: Jakarta (Indonesia representing the West) and Makassar (representing Eastern Indonesia). Activities based in Jakarta is coordinated by DML, while activities in Makassar is managed by DML’s partner, Enlightening Indonesia (ELISA) Foundation.
2. Recruitment of 40 facilitators for the two locations in Jakarta and Makassar, followed by 3-day training for those facilitators on the methodology used. Those facilitators are responsible to recruit participants for the public consultation sessions (May-June 2009).
3. Recruitment of participants are based on diversity of occupation, gender, place, and education (100 people for each location). For example, in Jakarta, participants come from West Sumatera, Bengkulu, Jambi, Lampung, Banten, Bogor, Sukabumi, Bandung, Cirebon, Jepara, Yogyakarta, Solo, Madiun, and Pangkalan Bun (Central Kalimantan) with a profession ranging from farmers, fisherman, students, religious teacher, NGO practitioners, journalists, and others. 4. After media campaign and socialization activities WWViews to the related parties and the public in July and Augest, then at the D-Day of WWViews event on 26 September 2009, the public consultation is conducted. In Jakarta area the location is Kinasih Resort, Caringin (Sukabumi). Results of the public consultation can be viewed at WWViews results together with other participating countries. The result will also be submitted to the Indonesian delegation to the COP-15 conference in December 2009.
